In the middle of concrete, tramlines, and the rhythms of city life, wild herbs persist – quiet, resilient, and often overlooked. Edible Zürich is a guided urban foraging walk and culinary gathering that invites you to slow down, tune in, and reconnect with the living landscape of the city.
We explore Zürich’s urban corners, tasting and identifying herbs, flowers, and roots thriving in plain sight. More than a walk, it’s an invitation to rediscover the city as a source of nourishment and seasonal wisdom.
The experience concludes with a shared cooking session, where we transform our harvest into simple, seasonal delicacies. In preparing and sharing food, we open a space for dialogue, memory, and a renewed connection between people, place, and plate.
Inspired by the work of Maurice Maggi, Zürich’s flower rebel and guerrilla gardener, this tour carries on his legacy. Lead by art mediator Alexandra Eichenauer, in collaboration with Detours Zurich.
Please note that this walk will be in German.
About Maurice Maggi:
‘With my seeds, I wanted to make a small, blooming statement in the grey city. It burst out of a small crack and the entire public space changed.’
– Maurice Maggi
Back in the 1980s, gardener and chef Maurice Maggi (1955-2024) recognised that the city had great potential for increasing biodiversity. He was the first ‘urban gardener’ and ‘plant activist’ to sow pioneer plants in the city that successfully adapted to their barren habitat.
